The Devastating Loss
You’re probably still wondering how this one got away.
England scraped the win in the last second, But how? From
Trent Boults terrible mistake to the controversial
decision from the umpire. You could almost say “things
weren’t going New Zealand's way that day.”

Trent Boults Mistake
There is one thing for certain, Boults untimely foot over
the boundary line effectively cost New Zealand the game.
So how did this affect the game so much? When Ben Stokes
smashed the ball, he didn’t quite time it right. Which
means the ball was in the perfect place for someone like
Trent Boult to be standing. So Boult took the catch
beautifully but unfortunately he stepped a bit too far.
Over the boundary to be exact, which therefore means it
wasn’t given “out” and was a “six” But that wasn’t the
worst part! Ben Stokes went on to win the game for
England with an outstanding performance!

The Contersial Decision
After New Zealand missed their only opportunity to get
Ben Stokes “out.” Stokes went on to score 92 runs
throughout the rest of the match. Six of those came
through one of the most controversial decisions in
sporting history! Stokes hit a ball on the ground and
took a risk by turning back and running for “two.” On
the way back he dived for his “crease.” The ball
deflected off his bat for a boundary. The umpire should
have called it a dead ball when the ball hits the bat
for the second time as that's what the rules state,
therefor England shouldn’t have been awarded six runs
and only two.

Exciting Finish
After all of the crazy stuff happening they ended up
tying. So the officials called for a “super over,” Super
overs don’t happen often and are quite rare in
international cricket. The captains of both teams get to
choose 3 batsmen whether they’re “out” or not, to bat
one extra over. The captains also choose one bowler for
that over. England had the advantage as they had just
come off from batting, so the batsman already “had their
eye in.” England hit a total of 16 runs in the over. New
Zealand came out to bat with 17 runs needed to win. The
exciting over ended with New Zealand sitting on 16 runs.
The crowd was in suspense. What are the odds of drawing
TWICE!? England ended up winning as the super over failed
to produce a winner. England took the cup due to the
rules saying if a winner is not decided after a super
over, then the team with the most boundaries win. England
scored 26 compared to New Zealands 16.

Summary
There were many things that happened that day that didn’t
go well for New Zealand but at the end of the day the
umpires made a decision and thats final!
